If you've spent any time looking for wax melts, you've almost certainly come across the debate: soy wax or paraffin wax? Depending on where you look, you'd be forgiven for thinking one is perfect and the other should never be used. The truth is much more balanced than that.
At Nuscents we make and sell both Original (paraffin) XL Wax Melts and Soy XL Wax Melts. We do that for one simple reason - both have their strengths, and different customers prefer different things.

What is paraffin wax?
Paraffin wax has been used in home fragrance for decades. It's a highly refined wax that offers excellent consistency, holds fragrance exceptionally well and is known for producing a strong scent throw. Many premium candle and wax melt manufacturers still use paraffin because of its reliable performance.
What is soy wax?
Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, making it a plant-based wax. It has become increasingly popular over the last decade, particularly with people looking for products made from renewable raw materials. Modern soy waxes perform far better than early versions and can produce fantastic results when paired with the right fragrance oil.
Is soy wax cleaner?
This is probably the biggest myth surrounding wax melts and candles.
You'll often see claims that soy is "clean burning" while paraffin is "dirty" or "toxic". In reality, it's not that simple. Product quality, fragrance loading, burner temperature, airflow and how a product is used all affect performance. The largest independent study between UK and EU bodies concluded there are no real emission differences between the two wax types.
For wax melts especially, the comparison is often overstated because the wax isn't actually being burned directly - it's simply heated to release fragrance. A well-made paraffin wax melt and a well-made soy wax melt can both perform exceptionally well.
Which has the strongest scent throw?
Generally speaking, paraffin wax is known for producing a stronger and longer scent throw. That's one of the reasons it's remained so popular for home fragrance.
That doesn't mean soy performs poorly. Plenty of fragrances smell incredible in soy wax, although some fragrance oils naturally throw a little softer. Some people actually prefer that, particularly in smaller rooms or when they want a more subtle background fragrance. Soy wax tends to release much sooner, due to its lower melting point.
Which lasts longer?
There's no universal winner - and we know it. With 60,000 orders and more than seven years in this industry, we know that, put simply, some customers will simply get along with one wax over another. Whether you're considering buying from us or elsewhere, we tend to recommend people sticking to a wax type which has previously worked for them. It's that simple.
How long a wax melt lasts depends on the wax, the fragrance oil, how much fragrance has been added, the temperature of your burner and even the room you're using it in. A high-quality soy melt can last just as long as a high-quality paraffin melt.
Appearance and frosting
Soy wax often has a creamy, natural appearance and may develop something called frosting. Frosting looks like white crystals on the surface and is completely normal. It doesn't affect performance.
Paraffin wax tends to produce a harder, smoother, glossier finish with brighter colours, making it a popular choice for decorative wax melts.
Is soy more eco-friendly?
Soy wax is produced from a renewable crop, whereas paraffin originates from petroleum refining. Because of that, many people choose soy for environmental reasons, although there are genuine concerns over soy farming and its practices. For this reason, we'd never sell it as being environmental.
However, sustainability isn't determined by a single ingredient. Farming, transport, manufacturing, packaging and overall product quality all contribute to a product's environmental footprint. There isn't a simple one-line answer.
Why we sell both
At Nuscents we don't believe in pretending one wax is perfect.
That's why we offer both our Original XL Wax Melts and our Soy XL Wax Melts across a huge range of fragrances. Some customers love the punchy scent throw of paraffin, while others prefer soy because it's plant-based. Both are made in Derbyshire using high-quality fragrance oils and thoroughly tested before reaching our website. Both our soy and paraffin waxes are produced in the UK, with their components sourced from within the UK and EU.
Which should you choose?
If you're after the strongest possible scent throw, you'll probably enjoy paraffin. If you'd prefer a plant-based wax or a quick release, soy could be the better fit.
Ultimately, neither choice is wrong. The biggest factor in how enjoyable a wax melt is isn't whether it's soy or paraffin - it is the quality of the ingredients, the manufacturing process, your equipment and home set up, and whether you love the fragrance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is soy wax better than paraffin?
Not objectively. They each have different characteristics and the best choice depends on what matters most to you.
Does paraffin smell stronger?
Often yes, although the fragrance oil itself has a huge impact.
Can soy wax melts fill a room?
Absolutely. A good-quality soy wax melt can produce an excellent scent throw.
Do soy wax melts frost?
Yes. Frosting is a natural cosmetic effect and doesn't affect performance.
Which wax does Nuscents recommend?
We genuinely recommend trying both, or trying the wax you've previously found works best for you. That's why we manufacture and sell both ranges, allowing you to decide which suits your home and your preferences best.
